proconsul Copy link • proconsul: prōconsul, ŭlis (rare): Cic. Div. 2, 36, 76: Sall. fr. Usu. better, pro consule, and always so when the subs. in Eng. is an attributive: when I was setting out for Cilicia as p., quum pro consule in Ciliciam proficiscerer, Cic. de Or. 1, 18, 82 (where proconsul would have been inelegant). (But proconsul must be used for the subject of a sentence, or when the term is generic: e. g. proconsul edixit; bella a proconsulibus administrantur.)
