To be n., torpēre: with incept. torpescĕre (to grow n.): Plin. 11, 37, 89 (torpescit pars ea corporis). Also, obtorpesco, torpui, 3 (to be struck n.): Plin. 9, 42, 67 (of the effect of the torpedo).
