• RESTORE
  • To give back, reddere, restituere to restore: to life, ab inferis excitare, revocare: restored to life, ab inferis excitatus, revocatus (☞ not redivivus):
  • To put into its former condition, restituere (general term): rursus restituere; reficere (to repair what was injured): reparare (to renew what had been more completely destroyed): renovare (to renew). In a wider sense, also, revocare (Liv.); reducere (Plin., Ep.); referre aliquid (Cic.). ☞ Avoid restaurare; even instaurare occurs but seldom in the best writers: to restore a picture, picturam jam evanescentem vetustate coloribus iisdem quibus fuerat renovare (Cic., Rep., 5, 1, 2): nova pictura interpolare opus (to restore with fresh colors; Plaut., Most., 1, 3, 103).
